History

Student Hockey Association Tilburg, SHOT for short, was founded in the 1980s. The founders wanted their own association where Tilburg students could play hockey together. The association had to have a pleasant atmosphere where it is always vibrant and pleasant, but where hockey is also played well. It had to be an association where all students could join, whether they already had a lot of hockey experience or none at all and whether they were studying at a HBO or university. Since its founding, this has always remained SHOT's starting point.

Students and hockey have always been a good combination. Students from Tilburg University have been playing hockey since 1937, but in those years there was no separate association. For a long time, there were two options for students who played hockey: they could mess around on the lawns of the university or student association Olof or they could become a member of a hockey association for 'citizens'.

In the spring of 1984 the need arose to change this. The establishment was very gradual over a number of years. A number of students who played hockey at the Tilburg Hockey Club Were Di proposed splitting off and starting their own association. Were Di responded very nobly to the students' initiative and supported the idea. The hockey association, however, was a different story. She wasn't very fond of students at that time. A board member of the KNHB once said: "Students arrive late, are noisy, do not keep appointments, always play in irregular clothing and are therefore certainly not serious enough to participate in the competition.” So strict conditions were imposed. The new association first had to run a trial run for two years under the banner of 'father association' Were Di. Initiators Arnold Theeuws, Luc Frantzen, Kitty Arntz and Jan van de Wetering had negotiated that the students had their own field, uniform and contribution. They also had their own name. The Tilburg Student Hockey Association was chosen, which can be abbreviated to SHOT. Partly thanks to the good cooperation with Were Di, the two years went without any problems and on April 22, 1986 SHOT was established as an independent association by recognized by the KNHB.

SHOT started with one women's team and one men's team, but in 1988 the association already had six teams, four of which were for men. Student humor was already present at SHOT then. This led to the Bart Kool Trophy for SHOT's top scorer. In 2011, SHOT has a very comparable prize in the form of the Victor Verhagen Bokaal. Nowadays the association has the SHOT team trophy.

The association became more and more professional: sponsorship contracts were signed, better ones

division of tasks between the board members and increasingly close cooperation with the Sports Center, the organization that supervises student sports on behalf of Tilburg University and the Tilburg HBOs.

In 1996, this collaboration led to SHOT being able to play its matches on an artificial turf field, not far from the campus of Tilburg University. Until then, the games were always played on a lawn.

In 2021, SHOT is a thriving association with 18 field and 10 indoor teams. That is small enough for a lot of fun in an environment where everyone knows each other, but large enough for decisiveness. The teams play at different levels. Everyone, from experienced players to complete beginners, can come and play hockey at SHOT. SHOT is the largest student sports association in Tilburg and a medium-sized student hockey association in the Netherlands. The principles of the very beginning, an association with a pleasant atmosphere where hockey is also played well, are still central and are confirmed every week by the many members. SHOT continues to professionalize and naturally wants to continue this line.
